PROGRAM
The design for this video
is based on 25 years of successfully using video to teach
job-related Spanish to health practitioners. This program
is currently being used in hospital training programs and
in college and university classrooms throughout the U.S. and
abroad. SPANISH FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS offers the viewer
65 practical commands and phrases that allow the health professional
to carry out, with a very limited vocabulary, professional
procedures and duties with Spanish speaking patients. The
focus is on providing commands and phrases that elicit short
direct answers rather than long and complicated explanations.
For example, rather than teaching the phrase, "what 's the
problem?", the viewer learns how to say, "show me with your
finger where you have a problem." The objective is to allow
the health professional to be in control of professional situations
even with minimum language skills.

The focus is on providing
commands and phrases that elicit short, direct answers rather
than long and complicated explanations. For example, rather
than teaching the phrase, "What is the problem?" the viewer
learns to say, "Show me with your finger where you have a
problem." The objective is to allow the health professional
to be in control of professional situations, even with minimum
foreign language skills.
As sequential vignettes
take viewers from the emergency facility to the examination
room, and finally to the doctor's office, more and more cognates
(words in Spanish and English that are similar in spelling
and meaning) are introduced. At each step of the way, as a
patient is being attended to and examined, viewers respond
to a variety of self monitoring interactive drills, exercises,
and quizzes which enable them to effortlessly commit to memory
the situational commands and practical phrases that make up
this comprehensive program.
The video program concludes
with instructions for taking medications, applying ointments,
and bandaging injuries.

The
Spanish for Professionals Multimedia Programs were designed
to enable non-Spanish speakers to carry out their professional
responsibilities courteously and effectively with a minimum
of language skills. Job-related commands and useful phrases
are taught through a variety of media. Special attention is
given to mastering the Sentence Generator™ concept that
allows learners to create more than 1,000 sentences from just
39 core words. Professionals are taught strategies that allow
them to maintain control of job or task-related conversations
even with a limited vocabulary. Students learn to replace
"open-ended questions” with either commands or multiple
choice questions whenever possible. For example, in the Spanish
for Health Professionals program, health providers are taught
to replace: "What's the matter/problem?" with the clear and
direct polite command, "Please show me with your finger where
you have pain / a problem." Rather than "What kind of pain
do you have?” health care professionals learn to ask,
“Is it a dull, sharp, or pulsating pain?"
These
programs may be used in either a classroom setting or for
self-study at home.
